Growing up in PA I had fresh picked greens from the garden on my plate every night in the summer and home-canned veg all winter long. Most NYers I know eat nothing but garbage takeout food. This whole piece, especially the, “Gasp, look at their fat bellies!” header image, is gross.
But, in the author’s defense, we’re talking about a place where the word “salad” by itself can mean this.
This is just really bad, even for the Times. Beyond the whole “it’s very easy to get good food in the midwest” argument, which, duh, yes, I mean the author goes out of his way to go to “meat meccas” instead of more vegetarian-friendly restaurants and then plays the art of pretend forgetfulness about purposefully going out of his way to get offended, the real thing that is getting to me is that he’s pretending that New York isn’t exactly like the fake midwest he is describing. Right down to the asshole who somehow is unaware of social conservatism in Brooklyn (hint: leave Park Slope or Bedford Avenue).
